Let’s Talk About Food

Do you know how the FDA came about? Here’s a hint: Through tactics like the “Poison Squad,” Harvey Washington Wiley (1844–1930) waged continuous warfare on adulterated foods and drugs. The result was the Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906.

Yeah, Harvey and his gang were pretty committed to doing something about food adulteration. It seems Upton Sinclair’s book “The Jungle”, started a public outcry about the meat and conditions of the meat houses at the time. Next thing you know he created the Poison Squad . Shortly after, voila, the FDA. But that’s enough about them. After all, it’s government ain’t it?

Over a hundred years ago the great satan - capitalism - revealed that it could not be trusted with foods. Just kidding. The “great satan” got you didn’t it? It would be easy to copy the moral philosophy and emotional tone of the major religions when speaking on subjects of perceived importance.

But, for me, you can just take out the phrase “the great satan” in the first sentence and that is where we’ll be. How is it that this fact is still true today? Why do we have two different types of food (organic and non-organic)? Does this not speak to the obvious condition of there being “good food” and “bad food”?

A report from “International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development” says:

Organic food provides a variety of advantages and nutritional value for human health. Some studies shows that organic foods have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally grown counterparts, in addition, people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptom lessons or go away when they eat only organic foods. In addition: organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, insecticides. These chemicals are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain in and in the food we eat. Organic food is often fresher. Fresh food taste better. Organic food is usually fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is often but not always, so watch were it is from produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.

I don’t even know why this isn’t common sense. I mean, food with chemicals or food without chemicals.

If that isn’t enough, not only is it better for the individual that consumes it, organic food is also better for the environment.

Here is just a little more information about what is going on with our food.

So now what species wins the Dumbass of all Evolution-To-Date award? I think it might be the one that poisons its own food.
